The other day, Sabrina (skirt! Charleston editorial assistant) posted a blog entitled “Alterna-jobs.” It was all about what jobs she would have if she didn’t work for skirt! Obviously, I really love my job at skirt! (don’t worry, boss!), but I’m one of those people who is always thinking about what kind of things I’d like to do in the future...or all at the same time. This is a condition I inherited from my dad, the preacher/music-shop-owner/jazz-rocknroll-country-musician/
farmer/property-developer.
So, these are the things I have considered being:
Hairstylist. I’ve always thought working as a hairstylist was a worthy profession, mostly for two reasons: 1) You’re helping make someone feel beautiful, and 2) You can sort of double as a counselor. I worked in a salon as a teenager, shampooing people and making appointments, and you would be amazed what people will tell you when you’ve got your hands in their hair. I, of course, would like to use this power for good and not evil.
Shop Owner. My little sister and I have been planning our shop for years. It’d have clothes, household decor, and other fun things like accessories, handmade cards, and shoes. Ideally all this stuff would be made by independent designers.
Coffee shop/Wine bar/ Music venue owner. As in all three. In one place.
College professor. I think this one will require more schooling, but I’d love to shape the minds of the young. I had this professor in college who was an expert in Victorian literature, and was also totally into pop culture. She’s the reason I became an English major, and I took every class she offered, no matter the content...I love her.
Traveling musician. Read my editor’s letter in the June issue of skirt! for more on this one!
What do you want to be when you grow up?
