Can it.

I don’t have to tell you it’s been a tough year.  You know it firsthand, and even if you didn’t, you certainly would have heard about it by now.  It’s all anyone’s talking about.  I’m not going to bore you with commentary on our country’s economic situation.  Besides, I’m certainly not an expert and probably still couldn’t really tell you why or how we’re in this mess, anyway.

What I can share with you is a little lesson I’ve learned: sometimes the best way to counteract doom and gloom is to spread a little treasure and pleasure*.   My guess is that most of you reading this have plans for Thanksgiving tomorrow.  You obviously have access to a computer, so the likelihood is that your computer is plugged into an outlet, in a room, in a (most likely heated) house.  You probably ate dinner last night, and you may even have huffed and puffed at the pile of dishes in your sink afterwards – I know I did.

The thing is, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for, and it’s the perfect time to be thinking about that.  Our 401(k)s may be a bit thinner, and our Christmas gift budget may be scant, but I’m willing to bet you’ve got $5 in your wallet you could spend on a few cans of soup, beans, and Chef Boyardee.  Pick the cans up today during your last-minute Thanksgiving meal shopping, and drop them off at one of the Food Bank of Eastern NC’s locations (or at our skirt! holiday bash and food drive next month).

Don’t want to head back out to the shops again?  You can give now, online, and every dollar can provide 8 MEALS for someone who’s hungry.

Then, tomorrow, when you’re faced with the mountain of dishes in the sink, take a moment and give thanks for the fact that you’re running out of Tupperware to hold all your leftovers.

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

*A literary stretch, I know – but it’s the holidays!

Thank you for writing about this. I heard back from the local food bank this morning about how I can help them. There are a lot of different organizations that I try to help year-long, but feeding the hungry touched me recently because of the little boy, Brenden Foster, who just passed away and his dying wish was to help feed the hungry. I am doing so in honor of him. =)
