Ten years ago, Elizabeth thought it would be fun to get together with some female entrepreneurs she knew and talk about business. A photographer with her own studio, Elizabeth was interested in learning from other women’s experiences. She started organizing monthly dinners at Humble Pie in downtown Raleigh, but the group soon grew to be so large that they had to move to Elizabeth’s house. “There’d be 30 people in my living room. It got to be out of control because we had so many people. NBC came to us and we were like, ‘What? We’re not even anything.’” The monthly dinners have since become an incorporated non-profit organization called Chix in Business, boasting over 130 members. Elizabeth, who has now been heading up Chix for 10 years, will be stepping down in 2009 to make room for a new president. “I’m excited. I feel really positive about where it’s going. It’s time for some new blood.”
